SEOUL AFP - A German advertisement showing an Asian woman getting aroused after smelling dirty laundry worn by white men has fuelled anger in Seoul, with many women calling it racist and demanding an apology. The commercial, produced by German DIY-store chain Hornbach, shows white men working outside in a garden before removing their sweaty clothing and dumping it in a box. The ad then cuts to a grey, industrial city that resembles Tokyo, where an Asian woman buys a bag of dirty clothes - previously worn by the men - opens it and moans with pleasure, as the commercial ends with a slogan saying: "That's how the spring smells". An online petition asking for a public apology from the German firm and the removal of the ad had secured almost 1, signatures by Thursday March 28 afternoon. The German firm has defended the commercial, tweeting that it was not "racist" and showed the "decreasing quality of life in cities". The firm also said that the industrial town featuring the Asian woman was meant to be a "fictional city", not one based in Asia.

Then, a week later, after clips surfaced of comedian Shane Gillis calling Yang a racial slur, Yang tweeted at Gillis, offering to meet and commiserating about how society has become too vindictive about offensive jokes. So when journalist Jeff Yang invited me to an off-the-record meeting held last week between Andrew Yang and AAPI activists, I thought it could be a valuable opportunity to clarify. So on Tuesday, about a dozen Asian American writers, activists and media personalities gathered at a restaurant in West Los Angeles. The meeting was cordial but tense.
We are sorry that we did not see these clips earlier, and that our vetting process was not up to our standard," the statement said. The announcement came days after the show faced mounting criticism and pressure to cut ties with Gillis, as multiple videos showed the Pennsylvanian comedian making racist slurs against Chinese, imitating a Chinese accent as well as disrespecting Chinese culture. The videos circulated on social media hours after SNL announced last week that Gillis was to join the cast, along with two other comedians. In response to the videos, Gillis defended himself on Twitter, saying he was "a comedian who pushes boundaries," a characterization that received further backlash from social media as "non-apology. As regards to being disinvited to join SNL, Gillis again stopped short of apologizing for his remarks, saying he respected the show's decision and understood his presence "would be too much of a distraction.
That ugly exclamation rattled the ears of editor Michael Luo who, with family and friends in tow, headed to get lunch at a nearby Korean restaurant on the Upper East Side streets of Manhattan last month. Luo wrote an open letter in the New York Times to the white woman who roared it, telling her how such verbal daggers sever Asian-Americans from their citizenship. We shower sympathy on black and brown people; Asian-Americans experience but a sprinkle. This begs for amelioration. We must understand that a national conversation about racism that ignores the plight of Asian-Americans carries an unforgivable omission.
